👶 A Miraculous Birth
The birth of ‘Īsā (AS) was miraculous, as he was born without a father to his mother, Maryam (AS), who was a virgin. Allah sent the angel Jibrīl (Gabriel) to announce the news to Maryam, that she would conceive a son by the command of Allah, despite being untouched by any man.
“[The angel] said, ‘Such is Allah. He creates what He wills. When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, ‘Be,’ and it is.’”
[Surah Āli ‘Imrān 3:47]
Maryam (AS) was initially shocked, but she placed her trust in Allah’s power and accepted the command. Her miraculous pregnancy was a sign from Allah for the people.
🌿 His Early Miracles
From the moment of his birth, ‘Īsā (AS) was a sign of divine power. He was blessed with many miracles by Allah’s will, including:
- Speaking as an infant: After Maryam (AS) was accused by her people of immorality, she pointed to ‘Īsā (AS), who spoke and declared himself as a servant of Allah: “I am indeed a servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet. And He has made me blessed wherever I may be…”
[Surah Maryam 19:30-31] - Healing the sick: He performed numerous healing miracles, curing the blind, lepers, and others by Allah’s will.
- Raising the dead: He brought the dead back to life through the permission of Allah.
- Creating a bird from clay: He made a bird from clay and breathed life into it, which flew by Allah’s permission.
“I have come to you with a sign from your Lord. I will create for you from clay [something] like the form of a bird, then I will breathe into it, and it will be a bird by permission of Allah.”
[Surah Āli ‘Imrān 3:49]
📜 His Message: Call to Monotheism
Like all prophets, the central message of ‘Īsā (AS) was to worship Allah alone. He called the Children of Israel to submit to the one true God, leave their sinful ways, and follow the straight path.
He also brought the Injīl (Gospel), a divine scripture that contained guidance for his people, and his message was in complete alignment with the teachings of previous prophets like Mūsā (Moses) and Ibrāhīm (Abraham) (AS).
“Indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. This is the straight path.”
[Surah Āli ‘Imrān 3:51]
🕊️ The Disbelief of the People
Despite the many miracles performed by ‘Īsā (AS), many of the people of Israel rejected his message and accused him of blasphemy. Some even demanded that he perform further miracles to prove his legitimacy, but his message was clear: faith and righteousness, not just signs, were required to enter the truth.
The leaders of his time plotted against him, planning to kill him because of their rejection of his message. However, Allah protected him:
“They [the disbelievers] said, ‘Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, ‘Īsā, the son of Maryam.’ But they did not kill him, and they did not crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them.”
[Surah An-Nisā’ 4:157]
This verse refers to the miraculous event of the crucifixion. Allah raised ‘Īsā (AS) up to Him before the people could harm him. Another person, believed by many to be Judas Iscariot, was made to appear like ‘Īsā (AS), and he was crucified in his place.
🌿 His Return (Second Coming)
Islam teaches that ‘Īsā (AS) was not crucified but rather raised up to Allah, and he will return before the Day of Judgment to defeat the false Messiah (Dajjāl) and establish justice on Earth.
“And indeed, ‘Īsā will be [a sign] for knowledge of the Hour, so be not in doubt about it and follow Me. This is the straight path.”
[Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:61]
When he returns, he will break the crosses, kill the pigs (symbolizing the rejection of false beliefs and practices), and unite the believers in worship of Allah alone.
