🌟 Early Life and the Miracle of His Birth
Mūsā (AS) was born in Egypt at a time when the Pharaoh (the ruler of Egypt) had ordered the killing of all male children from the Children of Israel. The Pharaoh feared that the descendants of the Children of Israel would rise up and overthrow his rule.
- Mūsā’s mother, in obedience to Allah’s command, placed him in a basket and set him afloat on the Nile River.
- The basket was found by the Pharaoh’s wife, Asiyah, who took pity on the child and adopted him, despite the Pharaoh’s orders.
“And We inspired to the mother of Mūsā, ‘Suckle him, and when you fear for him, throw him into the river, and do not fear and do not grieve. Indeed, We will return him to you and make him one of the messengers.'”
[Surah Al-Qasas 28:7]
🌿 Musa’s Upbringing in the Pharaoh’s Palace
- Mūsā (AS) was raised in the Pharaoh’s palace, surrounded by wealth and privilege, but he remained aware of his true identity as a member of the Children of Israel.
- He grew up with the best education and training in the palace but also witnessed the oppression of his people, who were enslaved by the Pharaoh.
🏺 The Incident in Egypt
As Mūsā (AS) grew older, he went out to see the burdens of his people and observed a dispute between an Egyptian and an Israelite. In defending the Israelite, Mūsā accidentally struck the Egyptian and killed him.
- Realizing the gravity of what had happened, Mūsā fled Egypt in fear of retribution.
“And he struck him, and the man was killed. He said, ‘This is from the work of Satan. Indeed, he is a manifest enemy and misleader.’”
[Surah Al-Qasas 28:15]
He escaped to Madian (modern-day Jordan) and took refuge with the people there.
🌿 Musa’s Time in Madian and Marriage
- In Madian, Mūsā (AS) helped two women water their flocks and, as a reward, was invited to their father’s house.
- The father, seeing Mūsā’s character, offered him one of his daughters in marriage.
- Mūsā (AS) worked for the man for eight to ten years as part of the agreement and lived a peaceful life during this period.
🌿 The Call of Allah at the Burning Bush
While traveling with his family, Mūsā (AS) saw a fire on the side of a mountain. As he approached it, he heard the voice of Allah calling to him from the burning bush, declaring:
“Indeed, I am your Lord, so remove your sandals. Indeed, you are in the sacred valley of Tuwa.”
[Surah Ta-Ha 20:12]
At this moment, Mūsā was given his prophethood and tasked with going back to Egypt to confront the Pharaoh, demand the freedom of the Children of Israel, and deliver Allah’s message.
🌿 Musa’s Mission: Confronting Pharaoh
Mūsā (AS) returned to Egypt and, with the help of his brother Hārūn (AS), stood before Pharaoh, demanding the release of the Children of Israel from slavery.
- Pharaoh rejected Mūsā’s (AS) message and arrogantly asked, “Who is this Lord of the Worlds you speak of?”
“Who is the Lord of the worlds?”
[Surah Ash-Shu’ara 26:23]
Mūsā (AS) then performed several miracles by the permission of Allah to prove his prophethood and the truth of his message:
- His staff turned into a serpent.
- His hand turned white when he placed it in his cloak, showing his divine power.
- A series of plagues struck Egypt, including locusts, frogs, and blood.
Despite these signs, Pharaoh continued to reject Mūsā’s (AS) call and hardened his heart.
💥 The Exodus: The Parting of the Sea
After a prolonged struggle, Allah commanded Mūsā (AS) and the Children of Israel to leave Egypt and escape the Pharaoh’s oppression. They fled, but Pharaoh pursued them with his army.
At the edge of the Red Sea, with the army closing in, Allah commanded Mūsā (AS) to strike the sea with his staff, causing the waters to part and create a dry path for the Children of Israel to cross.
“And We said to Mūsā, ‘Strike with your staff the sea.’ And it parted, and each portion was like a great mountain.”
[Surah Ash-Shu’ara 26:63]
When Pharaoh and his army attempted to follow, the sea closed over them, drowning them all.
“So We caused the sea to swallow them, and they drowned while they were wrongdoers.”
[Surah Ash-Shu’ara 26:65]
This event became known as the Exodus, a defining moment for the Children of Israel.
🌿 The Journey through the Desert and the Covenant
After their escape, the Children of Israel wandered through the desert. They were sustained by manna and quails provided by Allah, but they often complained and tested Allah’s patience.
- During this time, Mūsā (AS) went up to Mount Sinai and received the Tablets (Tawrat) — the laws and commandments from Allah.
- He was often faced with the challenge of guiding a people who were ungrateful and disobedient.
🏛️ The Golden Calf and the Punishment
While Mūsā (AS) was away on Mount Sinai, some of the Children of Israel began worshipping a golden calf, an idol made by Sāmiri. Upon returning and seeing their disobedience, Mūsā (AS) was furious and called for repentance.
- He destroyed the calf and demanded that they return to the worship of Allah alone.
- Those who repented were forgiven, but the idol worshippers faced severe punishment.
🌿 Musa’s Final Years and Death
Mūsā (AS) continued to lead the Children of Israel for the rest of his life, but he was not permitted to enter the Promised Land because of the disobedience of his people. His final days were spent guiding them, and when his death approached, Allah commanded him to ascend a mountain.
- Mūsā (AS) died and was buried by Allah, and his death remains a part of the Islamic tradition without further details.
- His legacy as a prophet of justice, obedience, and faith continues to inspire.
