🐫 The Story of Prophet Ismaʿil (إسماعيل عليه السلام)

🧬 Lineage and Background

  • Father: Ibrāhīm (AS)
  • Mother: Hājar (Hagar)
  • Siblings: Ishāq (half-brother)
  • Title: Ṣādiq al-Waʿd (True to his promise)
  • Mentioned: In several places in the Qur’an
  • Born: In ancient Canaan or Egypt
  • Language: Considered the first to speak pure Arabic fluently

👶 A Special Birth

Ibrāhīm (AS) and his wife Sārah were childless for a long time. Sārah offered her servant Hājar in marriage to Ibrāhīm, and Ismāʿīl (AS) was born.

He was the first son of Ibrāhīm (AS), and both father and son would go on to play major roles in the foundation of Islamic rituals and history.

🏜️ Left in the Desert of Mecca

By Allah’s command, Ibrāhīm (AS) took Hājar and baby Ismāʿīl to a barren valley (now Makkah) and left them there with a little food and water.

Hājar asked, “Did Allah command you to do this?”

He nodded, and she replied:

“Then He will not abandon us.”

Soon, the provisions ran out. Hājar began running between the hills of Ṣafā and Marwah seeking help — an act remembered in Hajj.

💧 The Miracle of Zamzam

As Hājar searched, baby Ismāʿīl cried in hunger. At that moment, Angel Jibrīl (AS) appeared and struck the ground — and Zamzam water gushed forth.

  • This miraculous spring still flows today near the Kaʿbah.
  • Nearby tribes settled due to the water, and Ismāʿīl grew up among the Jurhum tribe.

🕋 Rebuilding the Kaʿbah

Years later, Ibrāhīm (AS) returned to Mecca and together with Ismāʿīl (AS) rebuilt the Kaʿbah, the House of Allah.

“And [mention] when Ibrāhīm was raising the foundations of the House and [with him] Ismāʿīl, [saying], ‘Our Lord, accept [this] from us.’”
[Surah Al-Baqarah 2:127]

They made heartfelt duʿā for future generations:

“Our Lord, and raise up from among them a messenger…”
[Surah Al-Baqarah 2:129]

This duʿā was fulfilled centuries later with the coming of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, a descendant of Ismāʿīl (AS).

🔪 The Great Sacrifice

Ismāʿīl (AS) was once again part of a major test. Ibrāhīm (AS) saw in a dream that he was commanded to sacrifice his son.

He told his son:

“O my son, I have seen in a dream that I must sacrifice you. What do you think?”
[Surah As-Saffāt 37:102]

Ismāʿīl’s response was one of absolute obedience:

“O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, among the patient.”

As Ibrāhīm laid him down and prepared to sacrifice him, Allah intervened:

“You have fulfilled the vision.” And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice.”
[Surah As-Saffāt 37:105–107]

A ram was sent from Paradise, and the sacrifice was replaced — an event commemorated by Eid al-Adha every year.
