Surah Al-Muzzammil is a Makki Surah, emphasizing the themes of spiritual discipline, perseverance, and devotion to worship. It highlights:

  • The importance of night prayer (Tahajjud): The Surah urges the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) to stand in prayer during the night, except for a small portion, as a means of gaining closeness to Allah.

  • Patience in the face of adversity: It calls for endurance in worship and faith, despite the difficulties the Prophet (ﷺ) faced from the disbelievers.

  • Trust in Allah’s strength: Emphasizes reliance on Allah’s support when delivering the message of Islam, recognizing that true strength comes from Allah alone.

  • Establishing the Night Prayer: The Surah highlights the significance of prayer during the night as a means of spiritual purification and closeness to Allah. It emphasizes the importance of regular worship, especially in times of difficulty.

  • Support for the Prophet (ﷺ): It was revealed to support the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) during the early difficult years of prophethood, urging him to be patient and steadfast.

    • The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The best prayer after the obligatory prayer is the night prayer.” (Sahih Muslim)

    • Allah says in the Quran: “Indeed, with hardship comes ease.” (94:6) – This concept of enduring through hardship is reflected in the message of Surah Al-Muzzammil.
